It is no exaggeration to say that there is no one who does not know "CHANEL" and its status as a luxury French brand.
Unlike other luxury brands that had claims to fame like histories of supplying royal families, Coco Chanel, who came from an orphanage, established CHANEL as a luxury brand in just one generation. The journey was so tumultuous that it has been featured in many books and even made into a film.
CHANEL’S story began in 1910, when founder Coco Chanel opened a hat shop in Paris called Chanel Modes. Chanel Modes hats were not only simple and easy to look after, but were also well designed, making them instantly popular.
In 1916, the brand launched its ready-to-wear collection. The company introduced a dress made of jersey material, which gained attention for being low cost, corset-free, offering simple comfort and design, and being suitable for working women. In 1921, the iconic Chanel No.5 Eau de Parfum was created, and is now widely known as having been one of Marilyn Monroe's favorites.
Despite strong management, in 1939 the Second World War forced Coco Chanel to close all her stores apart from perfume and accessories shops. She spent the post-war years in exile in Switzerland, and it was not until 1954 that Coco came out of exile and reopened her stores. The following year, she launched the classic “Chanel suit”, a brilliant achievement that won her a Fashion Oscar.
CHANEL continues to shine as a brand that has its own original flare, and women identify with Coco Chanel's positivity and ability to shatter old values, and continue to forge new paths for the future.
