Moncler was founded in 1952 by René Ramillon and André Vincent in Monestier de Clermont, a village in the mountains around the town of Grenoble in France.
The brand name was coined by combining leiers from the name “Monestier de Clermont”. Originally, the company dealt in equipment for mountaineers such as tents, sleeping bags and clothing, with its down jackets originating from a wearable sleeping bag prototype that was used to keep factory staff warm.
To better understand the needs of mountaineers, Moncler brought in the first French alpinist to climb the Himalayas, Lionel Terray, as an advisor. The brand continued to improve its products, and it won the trust of mountaineers and adventurers worldwide after supplying the Italian Karakoram expedition in 1954, the French Makalu expedition in 1955, and the American Alaskan expedition in 1964.
Moncler down jackets are made from highest quality “4Flocons” white goose down, certified as such by rigorous examination by the French Standards Institute. To qualify as 4Flocons, fill power and insulation must be made with freshly harvested new down (the strongest there is). Only 30 grams of this new down can be extracted per bird, making it extremely rare, and only a limited number of Moncler down jackets are produced entirely with 4Flocon down, making them a very valuable commodity. The use of 4Flocon down delivers very lightweight down jackets with excellent heat retention due to their high-density fill.
Moncler down jackets are not only great for heat retention, but with their slim and stylish cut, have smashed the image of being apparel for outdoor and sportswear – they are now considered highly fashionable jackets.
Today, the luxurious “Moncler down jacket” is an essential item for winter fashion.
